EPD verification according to EN15804 as an approved individual verifier for different organisations
Reliability and trust is essential for the market acceptance of EPD. The underlying data, the data handling and the EPD itself should therefore be subject to an independent verification and official registration.
The international EPD® System, KBOB and IBU-Bau list Niels Jungbluth as an approved individual verifier. We also work for other systems like PEP. Thus, ESU can verify LCA-based data, additional environmental information and the EPD® written in English and German.
EPD tool verification
As demand for EPD development continues to grow, there is an interest in adopting pre-verified EPD and LCA tools to enhance efficiency in EPD development within the IES. Tool verifiers play a critical role in this process by evaluating the technical robustness and methodological alignment of these tools. This work requires solid expertise in LCA methodology, software systems, and database structures.
Tool verifiers are selected through a rigorous process, including a formal review and voting by the IES Technical Committee. This ensures that only qualified candidates are approved. The Secretariat of the International EPD System (IES) has approved third-party verifiers (including Niels Jungbluth) as tool verifiers for pre-verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools.
EPD platforms for publication of environmental product declarations
The EPD owner must register with an operator to register and publish the EPD. This organisation sets the fees which depend, among other things, on the number of EPDs published. The following table shows platform operators for registration and publication of EPDs with which ESU cooperated in the past.

- Type of products?
- Standard (ISO 14040, EN 15084, etc.) and PCR (product category rules)
- Which platform is foreseen for the EPD publication (e.g. environdec, IBU, KBOB, PEP ecopassport, etc.)?
- Number of pages in the background LCA report and EPD statement to be read?
- How many EPDs are based on one LCA report?
- Stages (A-D) and substages of EPD reporting in upstream, core, downstream and reuse sections
- Number of newly modelled process steps?
- Availability of the life cycle inventory analysis (preferably complete export from SimaPro)?
- Experience of the authors with reviewed and verified LCA/EPD studies?
