Use results from published EPDs of your suppliers for your own study
ESU offers a tool to import life cycle impact assessment results (LCIA results) published in an environmental product declaration (EPD) to SimaPro.
Case: You want to use product specific data from EPD studies e.g. of your suppliers to model your own processes and products in SimaPro.
Our Solution: Several thousands of EPDs (environmental product declarations) are published and form a possible basis for further LCA calculations. With the EPD importer, you can easily reproduce EPD results calculated by others with the EN 15804 + A1 or the EN 15804 + A2 assessment method in SimaPro. Thus, you can use such data provided e.g. by a supplier for own LCI models to calculate an environmental product declaration.
Procedure: You just need to replace the standard parameter values with the EPD results. The tool assigns the results automatically to individual emissions and eliminates double counts. The dataset is provided as a .CSV file. You can either copy and modify the EPD import file in Excel and import many datasets in bulk to SimaPro or import a dummy dataset and copy and adjust the copies directly in SimaPro.
Price: The EPD importer including a short documentation is offered for 300 CHF.

The procedure in more detail:
Import the tool to SimaPro:
- Open the target project in SimaPro.
- Go to File ->Import and select SimaPro CSV as file format. Use Add and navigate to the location where the file “ESU-EPD-result-Importer.CSV” is saved.
- Click “OK” on the bottom right to start the import. The import summary should look like below. If everything looks alright, click on “OK” again.
- You should now see the dataset “Example for modelling EPD results, parameterized” in the list of processes.
Use the tool in SimaPro:
- Copy the dataset “Example for modelling EPD results, parameterized” and change the name of the output and if necessary, output quantity and unit in the Input/Output section.
- Go to the parameter section and replace the “1” with the EPD results.
Use the tool in Excel
- Open the csv-file and write the name of product in cell “A104”. If the csv does not open correctly, please open excel and go to data -> import from text/csv and save the file again as csv.
- Change the values of the input parameters in cells “B149:B166”.
- Follow the steps above to import the dataset in SimaPro.
