What Is a Pre-Verified EPD Tool?
A pre-verified tool, based on an applicable Product Category Rule (PCR), contains data and calculation models that simplify the EPD process. The International EPD System allows the use of pre-verified tools after verification. Depending on the tool type, this can:
- simplify the individual EPD verification (pre-verified LCA tool),
- generate complete EPDs including all mandatory information (pre-verified EPD tool), or
- replace individual EPD verification with an annual EPD verification (fully pre-verified and integrated EPD tool).
The result: less verification effort, faster EPD publication and lower costs per EPD – without compromising reliability or compliance.

How the Tool Verification Process Works
The verification covers the underlying data, the LCA-based calculations, the presentation of environmental performance in the EPD and any additional environmental information. After project start, you receive our checklist with the main issues found in typical feedback rounds. You provide the tool documentation, the LCA background report and one pilot EPD statement. We review the documents, discuss findings in a telephone conference and guide you through usually two rounds of feedback until the documentation is ready for validation. Finally, you receive the signed verification reports for submission to EPD International.
