Strong Signals at Pharma Sustainability Days 2026

In the last week of May, we had the opportunity to attend the Pharma Sustainability Days, thanks to an invitation from SimaPro. The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders from across the pharmaceutical value chain, creating a valuable platform for exchange, learning, and collaboration.
One of the most encouraging takeaways was the clear momentum within the industry: many companies have already established science-based targets and are actively working toward reducing their environmental footprint. It is evident that sustainability is no longer a peripheral topic but increasingly embedded in core business strategies.
Growing Interest in New Standard: PAS 2090
A key highlight was the introduction of the new PAS 2090 standard, which was met with strong interest and attention. PAS 2090 defines product category rules for conducting life cycle assessments of pharmaceutical products. It provides a harmonized methodological framework to assess environmental impacts across the full life cycle—from raw material sourcing to production, distribution, use, and end-of-life.
With tools such as SimaPro’s compliance pack specifically designed for PAS 2090, companies can more efficiently implement the standard and streamline their LCA workflows.
Regulatory Horizon: Packaging and Waste
Another important topic discussed was the potential revision of the European Plastic Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD). The possible inclusion of primary medical packaging by 2035 is already casting its shadow, prompting companies to start evaluating the implications for materials, design, and circularity strategies.
This anticipated shift underscores the need for early action and innovation, particularly in an area where safety, compliance, and sustainability must be carefully balanced.
Connecting with the Community
Beyond the insightful sessions, it was also a pleasure to reconnect with familiar faces and meet many new ones. Events like the Pharma Sustainability Days highlight the importance of collaboration and shared ambition in driving meaningful change across the sector.
